I was fortunate to receive a one to one blacksmith experience day as a gift and subsequently visited last Autumn. The atmospheric Smithy, steeped in history when combined with the guidance of the Blacksmith (Annabelle), made for a great learning experience. She really does make everything look so easy, but I never felt any pressure as the techniques were taught at my pace in a really calm, patient and informative way. I was really pleased with the items I forged and along with a few cuppas, it was the perfect day.

Few practical experiences capture my attention quite like watching a blacksmith at work. Wandered into here on the way through to Malham Cove and so glad I did. It's hard to beat the sights and smells of a proper working forge. And at this one you can also buy some of the goods that are made there. If you're passing and you see the doors open treat yourself to a look inside.

This two day ‘follow up’ blacksmith course was organised by my family as a surprise birthday present. I had previously attended a course, with another blacksmith, over 10 years ago and although owning a small gas forge had not stood at an anvil for the last five.
As soon as I was given the details I contacted Annabelle to talk about my course and the potential project I had in mind (a 1.2m long wall mounted handrail adjacent to the steps leading up to my front door).
From this first conversation I sensed it was going to be a good course. Annabelle was very easy to talk to and it was obvious she had a great deal of experience, over 18 years worth! Annabelle listened as I described the vision I had for my project and although my choice of material size was on the large side, agreed that I could make the handrail.
From the moment I arrived at the Smithy Annabelle was friendly and enthusiastic about my chosen project. We started by making a relatively simple hook, Annabelle demonstrating each stage perfectly. She then observed my general techniques, if you could call them that, and suggested ways to improve, also pointing out my obvious technical limitations. But Annabelle was always respectful and managed to make her comments friendly and humorous, it seemed I had known her for years.
While I was making the handrail Annabelle was extremely supportive and gave good instructions and also ideas on how to tackle each stage of the project. She always ensured you worked safely and were aware of the potential hazards within the Smithy. But what I liked most was that she left me to do all the actual work, and heavy lifting, so the project was truly my own creation.
If you are looking for a blacksmith course, in a relaxed environment with an excellent teacher and in a stunning location, then I would certainly recommend a course with Annabelle. Whether for just a half day introduction class, a full day or a follow on course, she will get you standing in front of the aromatic coke forge and forming red hot metal on the anvil within the first hour. I believe a must for everyone to at least try, the sense of achievement is such a buzz!
I had a fantastic few days at Annabelle’s Smithy, she is a very talented, genuine person with a great sense of humour and wonderful personality.
I fully intend to return to the Malham Smithy for another course, but will certainly listen to Annabelle’s recommendations regarding material size, the completed handrail weighs a ton! - Sarah Murray··from Google

I got this experience as a present for my husband’s 60th birthday. We spent a day with Blacksmith Annabelle, a knowledgeable and patient teacher. She started at the beginning explaining about the forge, building the fire, fuel, temperatures, then she taught us how to forge and work the metal, all very hands on, Annabelle guided us throughout with calm and a cheery smile. It was all very interesting and we made some useful things for the house. My husband is a Yorkshire man of few words but I know he enjoyed the day as his comments for this review are
“We had a right good day and we right enjoyed ourselves”
Think that sums it up 😊

My friend and I undertook the one day course. It was fun, well paced, amazingly informative, safe as well as scary.
To say be both left with two pieces of work which families couldn't believe we actually forgedmeans Annabelle knows her stuff and teaches it effectively. Thoroughly enjoyable and would absolutely recommend to anyone fit enough to stand for a few hours and wield forging hammer. Just brilliant. - Ben F··from Google
We spent a day here for my dad's Christmas present (for a bit of background he's a former merchant navy engineer and loves stuff like this). It went down a storm, he was (and is) still on about how much fun he had making his key in the afternoon session.

What a gem! Annabelle was so friendly and welcoming, and the pieces she's created are amazing.
