About
Book in for a Malham Smithy Blacksmithing experience day course for beginners, focusing on learning key basic techniques that are the foundation to all blacksmiths forge work, from a simple hook to an elaborate sculpture.
Available for 1,2or3 people.
What will you do?
After a simple demonstration you will get straight into having a go at forging with hammer and anvil. You will be guided to safely use the hand tools and incorporate design elements into practical forge work.
At the end of a full forging day you can expect to take away a couple of pieces of your own handcrafted forge work. First being your test piece for working on techniques which could take the form of an elegant hook, plus a finished piece such as a toasting fork, poker or coat rack.
For the 3 hour sessions, participants will forge a fire poker.
Follow on courses are available for people that have already attended a Malham Smithy course. These will be run on a project basis, with designs to be reviewed in advance.

Few practical experiences capture my attention quite like watching a blacksmith at work. Wandered into here on the way through to Malham Cove and so glad I did. It's hard to beat the sights and smells of a proper working forge. And at this one you can also buy some of the goods that are made there. If you're passing and you see the doors open treat yourself to a look inside.

This two day ‘follow up’ blacksmith course was organised by my family as a surprise birthday present. I had previously attended a course, with another blacksmith, over 10 years ago and although owning a small gas forge had not stood at an anvil for the last five.
As soon as I was given the details I contacted Annabelle to talk about my course and the potential project I had in mind (a 1.2m long wall mounted handrail adjacent to the steps leading up to my front door).
From this first conversation I sensed it was going to be a good course. Annabelle was very easy to talk to and it was obvious she had a great deal of experience, over 18 years worth! Annabelle listened as I described the vision I had for my project and although my choice of material size was on the large side, agreed that I could make the handrail.
From the moment I arrived at the Smithy Annabelle was friendly and enthusiastic about my chosen project. We started by making a relatively simple hook, Annabelle demonstrating each stage perfectly. She then observed my general techniques, if you could call them that, and suggested ways to improve, also pointing out my obvious technical limitations. But Annabelle was always respectful and managed to make her comments friendly and humorous, it seemed I had known her for years.
While I was making the handrail Annabelle was extremely supportive and gave good instructions and also ideas on how to tackle each stage of the project. She always ensured you worked safely and were aware of the potential hazards within the Smithy. But what I liked most was that she left me to do all the actual work, and heavy lifting, so the project was truly my own creation.
If you are looking for a blacksmith course, in a relaxed environment with an excellent teacher and in a stunning location, then I would certainly recommend a course with Annabelle. Whether for just a half day introduction class, a full day or a follow on course, she will get you standing in front of the aromatic coke forge and forming red hot metal on the anvil within the first hour. I believe a must for everyone to at least try, the sense of achievement is such a buzz!
I had a fantastic few days at Annabelle’s Smithy, she is a very talented, genuine person with a great sense of humour and wonderful personality.
I fully intend to return to the Malham Smithy for another course, but will certainly listen to Annabelle’s recommendations regarding material size, the completed handrail weighs a ton! - Sarah Murray··from Google
