Courses suitable for beginners One to one tuition or two person bookings Learn key Blacksmithing techniques whilst forging your own piece of art to take home Gift certificates available - Makes an ideal gift Book in for a Malham Smithy Blacksmith day course for beginners, focusing on learning key basic techniques that are the foundation to all blacksmiths forge work, from a simple hook to an elaborate sculpture. What will you do? After a simple demonstration you will get straight into having a go at forging with hammer and anvil. You will be guided to safely use the hand tools and incorporate design elements into practical forge work. At the end of your forging day you can expect to take away a couple of pieces of your own handcrafted forge work. First being your test piece for working on techniques which could take the form of an elegant hook (or a bit of a twisted, split, tapered, punched, burnt scrap metal paperweight...) plus a finished piece such as a toasting fork, poker or coat rack. Who is the day suitable for? The day course is aimed as a one to one session, or a two person joint booking, for adults with no previous experience, allowing you to get the most out of your time at the forge. The day is a physical one in a centuries old traditional forge and may not be suitable for everyone. Contact the Malham Smithy if you have any injuries or disabilities before booking. Bookings cannot be taken for people under 18. When are the courses run? Dates can be arranged with Malham Smithy, both weekday and weekend courses are available. Dates can be booked at the time of purchasing by emailing courses@malhamsmithyonline.co.uk, or arranged at a later date if buying as a gift. Gift vouchers are valid for 12 months and are available electronically. The timing for the day is a 10am start, finishing at 5pm. You will have a break for lunch, good food is available to purchase in the village from The Buck Inn pub, The Lister Arms pub, the Old Barn Cafe and Beck Hall, all highly recommended. Alternatively you can bring your own packed lunch to enjoy sat by the scenic beck that runs to the side of the smithy. What to wear? Due to health and safety requirements you must provide your own safety glasses and safety gloves, apron and face masks. Wear overalls or old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or damaged, clothes should be natural fibres, cotton/denim, not synthetic and must have full length trousers and long sleeves. You are required to wear safety boots, non steel toe caps worn at your own risk. 2021 COURSES ONWARDS: COVID-19 UPDATES - PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING PPE REQUIREMENT - To avoid cross contamination, everyone attending a course is required to provide their own PPE as follows: ** SAFETY GLASSES to be worn at all times in the workshop. If you wear prescription glasses, you will need to purchase the ‘over glasses' style. ** SAFETY GLOVES to be worn in the workshop. They must be flame retardant and provide some form of heat protection. The must not be damaged in any way. ** LEATHER SAFETY APRON to be worn in the workshop. They must be flame retardant and provide some form of heat protection. The must not be damaged in any way. ** FACE MASKS to be worn at all times in the Smithy building. They must be of a minimum FFP2 standard and the CE marking must be clearly visible and must NOT have a valve (valves expel unfiltered air) . Please bear in mind that the mask must be well fitted to avoid steaming up your safety glasses. It is essential that you bring several masks to be able to change when your mask gets damp from hard work! SAFETY PACKS ARE AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE IN ADVANCE FROM THE MALHAM SMITHY. Malham Smithy updated precautionary safety measures, that are now in place to help combat the spread of COVID-19: ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST CONFIRM THEIR ADHERENCE TO THE FOLLOWING TERMS IN ADVANCE OF ATTENDING THE MALHAM SMITHY PARTICIPANTS SHOULD NOT ATTEND A COURSE IF: · You feel unwell (including common cold symptoms). If you present symptoms when you arrive, you will be required to do a lateral flow test before entry. · You have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, in the last 14 days, or have been instructed to isolate. · You have returned from a country in the red or amber list within the last 14 days. · You live in an area subject to local travel restrictions. The day in the workshop means we will be in close proximity, in a closed environment for a long duration, performing a physical activity, therefore, visitors pose as much of a risk as coming into the blacksmiths home. ON ENTRY TO THE BUILDING YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO: · Sanitise hands · Have your temperature checked · Complete track and trace details DURING THE DAY YOU MUST: · Wash/sanitise hands regularly, including before and after lunch, and when using the toilet facilities, using the Public Health England guidance techniques. · Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue (or into your elbow if no tissue). Tissues to be placed immediately onto the forge for incineration. Hands must be washed and face masks must be changed after coughing or sneezing. · Avoid touching safety glasses, eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands or gloves. · Food and drinks can only be consumed outside of the premises as masks must be worn at all times inside. Participants may wish to bring drinks to consume outside. Failure to adhere to the guidance above will result in postponement or cancellation of the course. We will continue to work within government guidelines in adapting to each new release of information as quickly as possible. MALHAM SMITHY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO POSTPONE BOOKINGS AT ANY POINT BEFORE THE START OF THE COURSE. IN ADDITION COURSES MAY BE CANCELLED ON THE DAY OF THE BOOKING SHOULD IT BE DEEMED UNSAFE FOR EITHER PARTY TO CONTINUE. Course fees are non-refundable, therefore refunds will not be issued under any circumstances, however alternative dates will be offered if the course is cancelled by Malham Smithy.
